How sweet it is: identification of vacuolar sucrose transporters.

چکیده
Vacuoles have diverse functions within all plant cells. Vacuoles get rid of wastes, accumulate nutrients, and regulate pressure within a cell. They are also known to store sugars. Many of the compounds within vacuoles are actively transported across the tonoplast membrane against a concentration gradient via transporters. The identification of transporters involved in vacuolar Suc transport was the focus of the study by Endler et al. (2006) titled ‘‘Identification of a Vacuolar Sucrose Transporter in Barley and Arabidopsis Mesophyll Cells by a Tonoplast Proteomic Approach.’’ This article appeared in the May 2006 issue, and as of June 2009 it has garnered 44 citations.

Identification of a vacuolar sucrose transporter in barley and Arabidopsis mesophyll cells by a tonoplast proteomic approach.
The vacuole is the main cellular storage pool, where sucrose (Suc) accumulates to high concentrations. While a limited number of vacuolar membrane proteins, such as V-type H(+)-ATPases and H(+)-pyrophosphatases, are well characterized, the majority of vacuolar transporters are still unidentified, among them the transporter(s) responsible for vacuolar Suc uptake and release. In search of novel t...
متن کاملTonoplast Sugar Transporters (SbTSTs) putatively control sucrose accumulation in sweet sorghum stems.
Carbohydrates are differentially partitioned in sweet versus grain sorghums. While the latter preferentially accumulate starch in the grain, the former primarily store large amounts of sucrose in the stem. Previous work determined that neither sucrose metabolizing enzymes nor changes in Sucrose transporter (SUT) gene expression accounted for the carbohydrate partitioning differences. Recently, ...

The production of phosphoenolpyruvate as a substrate for nocturnal CO2 uptake represents a significant sink for carbohydrate in CAM plants which has to be balanced with the provisioning of carbohydrate for growth and maintenance. In starch-storing CAM species, diversification in chloroplast metabolite transporters, and the deployment of both phosphorolytic and hydrolytic routes of starch degrad...
متن کاملEvolution of Plant Sucrose Uptake Transporters
In angiosperms, sucrose uptake transporters (SUTs) have important functions especially in vascular tissue. Here we explore the evolutionary origins of SUTs by analysis of angiosperm SUTs and homologous transporters in a vascular early land plant, Selaginella moellendorffii, and a non-vascular plant, the bryophyte Physcomitrella patens, the charophyte algae Chlorokybus atmosphyticus, several red...
متن کاملCloning, localization and expression analysis of vacuolar sugar transporters in the CAM plant Ananas comosus (pineapple).
In photosynthetic tissues of the CAM plant pineapple (Ananas comosus), storage of soluble sugars in the central vacuole during the daytime and their remobilization at night is required to provide carbon skeletons for nocturnal CO(2) fixation. However, soluble sugars produced photosynthetically must also be exported to support growth processes in heterotrophic tissues. To begin to address how va...
